As we have seen, tradition maintains that the patriciate originated during the regal period. Some modern historians, however, believe that it emerged only under the Republic, when the men who expelled the king and held office during the early years of the new regime attempted to form themselves into a closed aristocracy, and to arrogate to themselves and their descendants exclusive rights of access to positions of political and sacred power.34 This process was described by De Sanctis as ‘the closing of the patriciate’, a concept that has been widely accepted by subsequent scholarship, in my opinion rightly.
